The documentary community has been particularly resilient over the last year. Despite some opportunities, think of archive-based docs for instance, and a wealth of creativity in the industry, the pandemic has badly hit a genre which rely more than others on travelling, contacts and interactions with the outside world. The picture is even bleaker for immersive experiences whose commissioners and exhibitors have lost their audience and a significant part of their income.
The community will need to be resilient still in the coming months, in order to face a long-lasting impact of the crisis and the dramatic changes in the industry which have been accelerated or amplified by the pandemic, particularly in terms of usage.
The changes also bring opportunities, naturally, especially for the factual genre, which is increasingly popular, including among younger audiences. Furthermore, documentaries are in sync with current issues and expectations, from fighting fake news to decrypting and reflecting the complexity and diversity of our world.
Even though we still have a long way to improve the inclusion of communities which have been too voiceless and invisible.
Through #StorytellingMatters, these issues will permeate Sunny Side of the Doc and PiXii Festival. Besides the presentations of legacy players, we will welcome platforms and social networks which are challenging narratives, usage as well as business models.
Aside from sharing experiences and best practices in diversity, inclusion and gender parity, our Talent Hubs will highlight female filmmakers and talents from Central and Eastern Europe.
As usual, the 4-day market is an opportunity to look at the state of documentary, to shed light and anticipate the current changes, to help promising projects find international partners at our pitching sessions, and to provide a market platform for the distribution of completed films. In order to allow you to enjoy the full program, and to have time for meetings and interactions, the platform will go live on June 7th.
While preparing this online edition, the Sunny Side of the Doc team has been overwhelmed by your continued commitment to our event, and by the unwavering support of our partners. We thank you and wish you all a fruitful market.
