SSD Prize handed out at TokyoDocs!
Tokyo Docs, for its eleventh edition, has been held entirely online from November 1st-15th 2021 gathering 28 documentaries from international projects holders. On this occasion, Sunny Side of the Doc awarded the SSD Prize to ‘Outsider’, an Indian documentary project picturing the life of a 10-year-old boy being ostracized in a Northern-Indian village because of his Nepalese roots. The team wins 2 free accreditations for #SSD22 taking place from 20-23 June 2022 in La Rochelle.
Veeru knows nothing about Nepal or its spoken language. In his birthplace, a Himalayan village in northern Indian, he is often physically bullied, subjected to ethnic slurs, and ostracized from religious activities. Yet, Veeru, who carries a heavy burden of his fathers' ancestral Nepalese roots, finds comfort in his inner world inhabited by Indian mythical characters. As he embarks on an adventurous journey from childhood to adolescence, the film reveals his inner vibrance and most profound feelings. His poetic journey of perseverance echoes issues that span across all ages and communities.
Why this project?
Mathieu Béjot: "Among all the compelling stories pitched at Tokyo Docs this year, we picked « Outsider » for the Sunny Side of the Doc Prize. Rejection of foreigners and the dual identity of migrants are universal issues. Outsider looks at them through the eyes of larger-than-life Veeru, a 10-year old boy being ostracized in a Northern-Indian village because of his Nepalese roots. With Veeru, we embark on a harsh, emotional and poetic coming-of-age journey."
