On 2nd and 3rd February 2021, Sunny Side of the Doc is organising Global Pitch, a two-day online event of international pitch sessions centred around investigative and current affairs projects on topics relating to the climate crisis, health, economy or social and political issues.
The call for projects launches on 10th November, with entries closing on 10th December.
La Rochelle, 10th November 2020 – Sunny Side of the Doc, the international marketplace for documentary and narrative experiences, is launching a call for projects for the first edition of Global Pitch, which will take place online from 2nd to 3rd February 2021. The deadline for submitting entries is 10th December 2020.
At a time when the world is being turned upside down by the current health crisis, this new initative is part of a more global approach to the international marketplace held in La Rochelle. It aims to support the documentary community all year long through a series of interactive online events, the first of which is Global Pitch.
BOLD PROJECTS BRINGING ABOUT GLOBAL CHANGE
“The world is experiencing many issues and challenges, and the documentary genre has now more than ever a decisive role to play when it comes to understanding the present-day world, inspiring change and shining a light on action for the future”, explains Mathieu Béjot, Director of Strategy and Development.
For the Global Pitch, Sunny Side of the Doc is looking for investigative and current affairs projects (in development or in production) in the following formats:
– Feature film
– Short formats
– Multi-media concepts
– Immersive and XR experiences.
Projects must have strong potential on the international market be related to the themes of Climate and Environment, Science and Health, Economy, or Social and Political Issues offering a new vision and a revealing decryption on complex subjects and stakes of the current world.
The Global Pitch call for projects is open to all talent from all over the world (producers, directors, distributors and creators of linear, interactive and immersive content) looking for funding and new contacts to make their projects happen. Submitted projects which develop simultaneously an impact campaign on different channels or multi screens will be heavily favoured.
Registration for the Global Pitch is at the single price of 90 € (excl. VAT) for 1 submitted project.
TWO DAILY INTERACTIVE PITCHING SESSIONS
Following the success of the Connected Edition of Sunny Side of the Doc 2020, the new format of the marketplace for documentary and narrative experiences will suit an international audience.
During two days of pitch sessions, a selection of 12 investigative and current affairs projects which help us understand the present-day world will be presented to a panel of top-level decision makers. Each pitch will be followed by a live five-minute Q&A session, and will continue via pre-arranged one-to-one meetings with specific buyers and commissioning editors for initiating concrete creative and financial discussions.
Each session will be held twice during the day so as to reach decision-makers in all time zones: the morning (UTC+1/CET) will be for industry professionals in Asia, Middle East and Europe, and the evening (UTC+1/CET) will be for industry professionals in the Americas and Europe. The same applies for the Q&A sessions and one-to-one meetings.
Several television channels and funders have already confirmed their participation and interest:
France Télévisions, Arte France, Knowledge Network, SVT, RTS, YLE, BBC 4, NHK, Autentic, MDR, SWR, WGBH, WNET, Terra Mater, Sandbox, Little Dot Studios, Impact Partners, International Documentary Association…
The best pitched project will be awarded thanks to our sponsors, on the selection of an independent jury. The awarded creative team will automatically be invited to present their project in June 2021 in La Rochelle and will receive 2 free accreditations.

CHAMPIONING THE DOCUMENTARY COMMUNITY ALL YEAR LONG
In 2021, Sunny Side of the Doc is paving the way for new creative forms and new documentary production and distribution models. This is a collective effort in which the marketplace is committed to supporting the international documentary community around four fundamental perspectives and cornerstones which define the future of storytelling: Global challenges and international cooperation / Immersive realities and engagement / Emerging talent and diversity / Renewal of trust and ethics.
“By developing ‘Storytelling Matters’ as our editorial line throughout the year, the aim of Sunny Side of the Doc is to innovate, discover and embrace new perspectives offered to the documentary genre in every sense and form. We ought to support multi-facetted and independent productions which open up new future prospective for our industry, not only over the four-day event but also over the coming months”, concludes Mathieu Béjot.
