Fast-forward to June 2018, and more than 2,000 people are coming from 60 different countries to experience the 29th edition of Sunny Side. What a wonderful journey it’s been, and I’m incredibly proud. Making the impossible possible is such an achievement. Each and every one of us are responsible for that success.
29 years ago, we were organising the very first Sunny Side of the Doc in Marseille. At that time, there weren’t so many of us about. The documentary genre was badly received, often ignored and not so widespread at all. Our challenge: to create and develop the international market for documentary film – which appeared somewhat idealist, even unrealistic, to many. Fast-forward to June 2018, and more than 2,000 people are coming from 60 different countries to experience the 29th edition of Sunny Side. Culture feeds history, science, art and investigative documentaries. And so it seemed an interesting choice to use the theme of « Culture in Motion » to touch upon the entire documentary spectrum with an ecosystem approach. This leads us to rediscovering major projects concerning heritage, history and geopolitics. It’s a way to emphasise what exactly Sunny Side of the Doc represents today: a place where one can discover, buy and sell projects of such nature. This year, the German, Canadian and Chinese delegations have come out in force. In addition to Mr. Chen, the president from our Chinese partner CICC, I am delighted to welcome three heads of Ministries of Information, and the platforms Youku and Pili Pili.
Our remarkable partners are as reliable as ever, in particularly NHK who will be leading Monday’s events. They’ll be joined for the first time by Curiosity Stream, an American platform internationally-known for top quality documentaries. We’ve been backing them since the get-go, and they are involved in numerous European projects. As for the digital industry, which is revolutionising our professions and practices, we’ll be shining the spotlight on such Digital Culture in Motion in our PiXii space (Paths of Interaction, eXperiences in Immersion & Innovation), that can be found inside the Musée Maritime, a minute away from Sunny Side of the Doc’s main hall.
In 2019, and just like over the past 29 years, we’ll share with you the results of our surveys, experiments and innovations. Once again, we’ll gather together over the 24th to 27th June with either our recently finished films in hand or with projects that still remain a dream. A new Creative Europe MEDIA plan will commence, but without Great Britain. However, for us documentary-makers, borders are only relative, and we’ll form a sort of a new united international. One which wants to report on and present reality, telling it like it is, without any lies. At best, fake news serves as a great starting point for our investigations.
In 2019, we’ll be celebrating our 30th anniversary! That’s 30 years of this Market battling on, getting bigger and digging deeper – something we all very much appreciate. And we’ll all be there, of course, with La Rochelle’s sunshine to liven us up and keep our solidarity strong.
Enjoy this 29th edition, and may you find partners and enthusiastic dreamers ready to help your projects come to life.
Warm wishes and solidarity
