The Return of the Repressed

If there’s one good thing about crises, it’s the way they have of dispelling illusions. They bring us back to real life, back to the essentials. Brokers, economists and bankers lose a little of their gloss, their certainty, their arrogance. Commentators have started talking about the ‘real economy’ again, about the abuses and distortions caused by speculation. But do we have any idea what the ‘real economy’ will turn out to be? Does it still mean anything? Is it ‘real’? [...] > Read

Documentaries: films at the service of the public

Starting on January 8 of this year, public service television in France has been put to a difficult test. A new law went into effect before ever being debated in the Senate. The law is now in the books. It is now fact, certainty. But concerns about the sustainability of French television’s financing and its autonomy remain. The internal reforms were already underway, and were completed, with the risk that channels would increasingly lose their individual identity and that producers and directors would have only a single (and already saturated) outlet by which to discuss their proposals. Our 20th birthday party!

The first Sunny Side was organised in Marseille in 1990.
The twentieth will be held in La Rochelle from the 22nd to the 26th June.
More than 1,600 professionals from 50 countries will be there, including 330 decision-makers.
In these times of crisis, such positive figures are very good news.
To thank you for your loyalty and celebrate our twentieth anniversary, we’d like you to join us at a party on Wednesday 24th, starting at 10 pm.
You’ll be welcomed with open arms on our dance floor (if you’ll excuse the image) in the Espace Encan. [...] > Read

The success of the format tested over the last 7 years certainly owes a lot to its ability to adapt to the realities of different continents.
Although we are familiar with European “diversity”, we are only just beginning to appreciate the differences between the larger and smaller countries of Asia. ASD will provide an opportunity to grasp these differences, understand the accelerated changes at work and learn from the co-production agreements already concluded by pioneers on the two continents. SUNNY SIDE OF THE DOC: THE 21st EVENT!
After the success last year of our 20th anniversary fair and celebrations, and the successful organisation of a Latin Side of the Doc in Buenos Aires and an Asian Side of the Doc in Hong Kong, the Sunny Side team looks forward to welcoming you in La Rochelle, where it will help you deal with the economic crisis and find new partners. Again this year, there will be an extensive line-up of decision-makers: broadcasters, distributors and investors, new media, foundations and many others will all be there. More than 50 countries will be represented, including, for the first time, an Indian delegation. [...] > Read

Why Sofia?

[...] > Read

Developing a taste for discovery

A taxi driver told me the other day that he works every night and, after catching up on his sleep, most days he watches France 5, without checking the schedule first. He enjoys the element of surprise and loves discovering documentaries about unexpected subjects, “learning what I didn’t have the time or interest to learn at school”, as he put it. It's his way of gaining a rounded cultural education. This brief encounter confirms what we all know - that one of the central social roles of documentaries is education. [...] > Read

The success of the 20th edition (and the party) is now in the past. It reinvigorated and filled us with hope. We are now preparing the 21st edition so that it will definitively mark this 21st century. Sunny Side will continue to be first and foremost the Market for ALL documentaries, in all its present and future forms. From films for television and cinema to series, from educational to investigative, from webdocs to cross-media platforms - this diversity is our genre’s strength. [...] > Read

DIAGONALS OF THE DOC

As we make clear in this Newsletter dedicated to the development of documentaries on new networks, our future is Transmedia. The digital revolution is clearly with us and we have not yet gauged the full extent of the changes it heralds. Acronyms and neologisms are flooding into our glossary - only obvious for the digitally raised, certainly less evident for those who grew up in a world of film and chemical labs. However, the (epistemological?) transformation is clearly underway. [...] > Read
