FIRST LSD/DocBsAs (November 25 to 27, 2009): 300 ATTENDANTS IN BUENOS-AIRES

Starting with its ninth edition, Doc Buenos Aires has established a collaboration / fusion with Sunny Side of the Doc of France, the most important documentary film market in the region. For this reason, this year from November 25 to 27, we hold "DOC BUENOS AIRES / LATIN SIDE OF THE DOC (DocBsAs / LSD)" which took place at the Alliance Francaise in Buenos Aires within the framework of Ventana Sur - the first edition of a film market organized by Sunny Side of the Doc and Doc BsAs with the support of the the INCAA (Argentine National Institute of Film and Audiovisual Arts), of ARTE and the CNC, in cooperation with the Marché Du Film of the Cannes Film Festival.

The DocBsAs / LSD consists of the fusion of two initiatives that have existed for many years, in order to join their experiences with the aim of more deeply integrating the Latin American audiovisual market with the international market of documentaries. The proposal is to unite, at a single event, the main producers and broadcasters around projects.

60 Europeans have travelled to Buenos Aires to meet Latin-American documentary makers from Chile,Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, Columbia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brasil and Argentina… 35 deciders were able to discover 20 pitched projects, and meet individually all of the producers.  ITVS, ShowTime Networks, Latin Public Broadcasting/PBS,TéléQuébec, l'ONF, YLE, Multicanal, ARTE, RTBF, Music Box on one hand and La 7, Encuentros, Canal(a), ISat Space, TAL TV, Volver, Primer Plano & Americine (Argentine), TVN Chili, TVN Uruguay, Tele Sur (Venezuela) on the other.

The Latin American audiovisual market has been progressively consolidating itself and must find ways and strategies of better integrating itself into the international market. Sales, pre-sales and co-production are the three main modes of this market, but there is still a great shortage in Latin America of resources, strategies and sales tools. The principal objective of DOC BUENOS AIRES / LATIN SIDE OF THE DOC is education, that is, to communicate to the professionals of Latin America the rules, tools and understanding of the international Market’s needs.

The second edition will take place next year, still in Buenos Aires, with the Ventana Sur market, organised by the INCAA (Argentina) and the Cannes Film Market, with the support of Media International.

DOC BUENOS AIRES/LATIN SIDE OF THE DOC will then be:

• Side by Side. Personal meetings between producers and commissioning editors.

• Presentation of Projects (Pitching). plenary sessions in which the 24 selected projects will be presented before an international jury. Throughout the course of this meeting, the narrative and aesthetic aspects of each project will be presented and discussed. Also, possible financing and market penetration will be determined.

• Panels, case presentations, and networking lunches and breakfasts will be organized to facilitate individual contact and networking for the development of co-productions.

• Catalogue & Website. The selected projects will be edited in a catalogue given to all participants. The details of each participants will figure in the "Who’s who" section of the catalogue.

• Ventana Sur Market. The BDA / LSD participants will have access Ventana Sur market (November 27 to 30) which will enable them to have meetings with other professionals that are present.

The Awards :

The DocBsAs / LSD jury determined the distribution of development awards that are offered at this edition:

The Sunny Side of the Doc prize for the Best European Project was given to the AMIP (Xavier Carniaux) for “The Hand of the Vatican” by Jean-Michel Meurice, coproducted by ARTE.

The Best Latin project (3000 $), Awarded by the INCAA, was given to “Fuera de Lugar” (Out of Place), by Diego Mondaca, from Chile - Production : Pucara Films and Manosudaca.

The Best Project Southern Cono Sur (2 500 €), was given to "Cedron", by Fernando Perez - Production : Magma Cine (Argentina)

The Most Creative Project (3 000 €) Awarded by ARTE France (European cultural channel, France), was given to "Geometria y misterio" by Ignacio Aguero - Production : Lupe Films (Chile)

The Mercosur Award to the Best Experimental Documentary (2 000 €), was given by the Secretary for Audiovisual / Brazilian Ministry of Culture to "Sonidos vivos" by Luis Quequezana - Production : Cabina Libre (Peru)

The Canal (à) Award (television pre-purchase rights for 1 000 €) was given to " Resonencia" by Mateo Herrera - Production : Sarahi Echeverria (Ecuador), by Canal (à), Argentine television channel

The Odyssea Award went to " Peron Peron" by  Blas Eloy Martinez - Production : Micromundos  (Argentine).



The launch of the new satellite channel ODYSSEA AMERICA LATINA announcement was made during the Latin Side of the Doc and the event Ventana Sur, which is a joint venture between Pramer and Multicanal Chello. It will be broadcasted in 2010, throughout the whole continent. It will be exclusively documentary oriented.
