“HISTORY has a great future! Ancient history –  the stories of empires, kings, wars and dynasties – has always fascinated us. Storytellers today have more tools and techniques than ever before to tell, illustrate and bring that history to life. Finally, with social media wedded to programming, we have the opportunity to crowdsource storytelling and to invite the audience to participate  and share in the storytelling process. Looking back has never been so forward-looking as it is today.”

“HISTORY has probably been the most underrated genre in factual filmmaking for a while. It´s only now, that people start realising again, how much more current, more relevant and more immediate films on History can be than any other genre. In a time, where everyone can claim anything, anytime, without regard to such things as truth, or honesty, it´s the human capacity to elevate oneself beyond the moment, that gives us back our dignity. Besides, History is always new. The genre keeps reinventing itself in a wonderfully creative way with every generation applying its own specific look at the same reality.”

“Sunny Side of the Doc is the perfect meeting place for international film archives, archive producers and researchers, and HISTORY programming broadcasters and producers. It is a chance to find out about new collections, innovative ways of using archive material, and copyright and rights issues. I wouldn’t miss it!”

“The old wave is losing power; the next wave is yet to form. HISTORY programming is at best in flux and at worst, floundering and lost. Which means it’s the perfect time for the new, the creative. What’s the big “next wave” when the transactional ‘bro-mance’ approach finally runs out of gas? How do you make history urgent, not to say personally relevant, beyond the pawn shop and the auction block?”

« The great Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) put it in a nutshell. He once said, “Film-makers should remember that all their films will be played to them again on Judgment Day.” Is he right? We’ll see! Insh’allah! If the Eternal One wishes! Until then, let us keep that in mind. Because it won’t just be film-makers, but also producers, programme makers and television people. And let us revamp HISTORY! At Sunny Side of the Doc 2017! »

«We live in historic fast-changing times, but how do you make history television work in 2017, when objective history seems more important than ever? There is still a traditional history audience out there, but will you scare them off if you try too hard to win over new and younger audiences? Are there new approaches to old subjects and how can we make best use of all the digital tricks and delights on offer? I hope that at Sunny Side we can investigate and debate all of these and find original ways to make history happen.»
