Here we are back together again, in Sichuan’s capital city Chengdu, for a new edition of Asian Side of the Doc.

It has grown from the first four editions which, from Hong Kong to Seoul, from Tokyo to Kuala Lumpur, gave us a great insight into Asian markets.

With the active support of the China Documentary Film Commission and the government of the City of Chengdu, we can now make the event a real marketplace, with company and group and more than 80 exhibitors. This shows how dynamic documentary-making is in Asia and also shows the growing interest of other countries in this continent which has so many stories to tell, so many films to broadcast.

The number of documentaries in the catalogue and their quality are evidence of this development. The number of coproductions is increasing, contacts have been firmly established and the opportunities available go beyond television: giant screens, online platforms and crowdfunding are all new avenues to explore.
In China new regulations have come into force supporting the increased broadcasting of documentaries on television.

And some of them even have access to theatrical release. It is amazing to witness the sea-change in the situation of documentaries in China over the past 5 years. The channels of the CCTV Group, regional broadcasters, increasingly efficient producers and the developing new media, mean a new audiovisual landscape is taking shape.
Asian Side will provide us with an opportunity to strengthen this change.

In Europe, Canada, and Australia, Asian horizons are no longer distant. The French, German and Australian delegations present are proof of the growing interest in stories from the Far East.

These changes and these hopes will be the driving force behind this 5th Asian Side.
It will also be opening under the auspices of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. This was an important even for both countries. And the number of documentary coproductions underway between the two will clearly strengthen this long history.

You will have a chance to discover Chengdu and the outstanding cooking of Sichuan! And maybe even pay a visit to the giant pandas. I am convinced that you will never forget this journey and the contacts that you will make or deepen will become the foundations of your new projects.

Finally, I’d like to remind you that in three months time we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of SUNNY SIDE OF THE DOC in La Rochelle.
Defending and celebrating documentaries, opening horizons and developing coproductions.
You will all be welcome, and will have an opportunity to see your new partners and contacts again.

I hope that you will find this Asian Side fruitful, astonishing and full of promise.
