With one billion players worldwide, video gaming is now the world’s biggest cultural industry. Of these, some 350 million participate in eSports, which involves playing video games as part of a competition. Considered as a discipline in its own right – with its own stars, community of fans, and economic model – eSports attracts large audiences, yet remains largely unknown to the general public. Through the outstanding careers of the top players of League of Legends, Starcraft II, and Warcraft III, GAME FEVER explores the extraordinary boom in eSports, this new cultural phenomenon that in the space of a few years has gone from the intimacy of the internet server to the world’s most famous sporting arenas. This is a film about how the new generation took control of cultural power, immersing us in the lives of these new icons of a world in which the boundary between the real and the virtual becomes more blurred every day.
